When Disaster Strikes Print E-mail

  1. If possible, backup the data immediately.
  2. If the drive makes scraping, tapping, clicking or humming sounds, do not use software utilities.
  3. Do not power up a device that has obvious physical damage or is making unusual sounds.
  4. Shut down the computer to avoid further damage to the drive and its data.
  5. Do not attempt recovery yourself on severely traumatized drives. Using off-the-shelf diagnostic tools may cause further damage or permanent data loss.
  6. If possible, standardize computers in your office and keep a spare.  Ideally this would have all the applications installed and be ready to use.
  7. Configure another computer/server to temporarily replace the problem unit, restore available backups onto the new unit and reconfigure it as necessary to begin productive work.
